Topic: Scalability and efficiency through automation in business intelligence
Subtitle: Discover how automation can transform your BI processes
Agenda:
The automation of data warehouses (DWA) is revolutionizing development processes and enabling significantly faster implementation. However, before a suitable tool can be used, it must be carefully selected - a process that can take between two months and two years, depending on the company structure and culture. With the dwa-compare.info portal, DDVUG has created a platform that significantly accelerates this selection process. In this presentation, we explain the basics of this comparison and provide valuable tips on how you can quickly find a suitable tool.
Experience shows that accelerated development does not always mean that new data is provided more quickly. Rather, previously minor issues can become time-critical challenges. Many of these aspects are beyond your control. It is therefore advisable to take a close look at the interfaces of the data warehouse and think about integration into the company.
Michael Müller has been working in the field of business intelligence for over 20 years. His expertise includes data modeling, data architecture, data vault, DWH automation and the integration of BI into the company. He is currently active on the board of the German-speaking Data Vault User Group (DDVUG) e.V.
This presentation introduces an innovative approach to the automated transformation of data into Data Vault objects within an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). The goal is to standardize and optimize data integration to ensure seamless usability for specialists and non-specialists. By integrating the principles of the data mesh, we promote organizational adaptability and shared responsibility in data processing, which improves collaboration and unlocks domain-specific expertise. Our enhanced ETL framework with automation components has optimized the data pipeline, ensuring stability and improved quality. We share insights on overcoming technical challenges, driving organizational adoption and ongoing efforts to refine this transformative approach that will revolutionize data integration and management.
Data Mesh - organizational adaptation:
We have worked intensively with the principles of the data mesh approach to identify functions, processes and mechanisms that are relevant to our organization. In doing so, we check which aspects can already be mapped with existing tools and processes and where there is a need for development. We were able to seamlessly transfer these considerations to our organization.
Automated data pipelines:
The existing ETL framework has been modularly expanded to include an automation component. This is easy to use, fully integrated into the system landscape, quality-assured and operationally stable.
Mindset change - changing the way we handle data:
The previously centralized responsibility was transferred to a model of shared responsibilities. This promotes the development of strengths and expertise. Data vault modeling, context description, rule-based pipeline configuration as well as adaptation and operation of the data path are now shared tasks. This mindset shift enabled the teams to use new processes and technologies effectively and to view data integration as an integral part of their daily work.
Current status:
The technological challenge of automated transformation was successfully overcome. A decisive factor was the continuous feedback at a technological and organizational level. This enabled us to optimally adapt the automation component to different data constellations and increase the efficiency of data modeling workshops and knowledge transfer. We also carried out intensive training in the area of Data Vault. Despite the progress we have made, we still face challenges that we are currently tackling.

Summary:
Really understanding data takes time. It is about gaining deep insights into the use of data, defining data models and gradually improving them to show exactly what is happening or should be happening with the data. This process often involves changes in design and implementation, such as adjustments to the physical data model or data logistics processes.
Automation offers an effective way to accelerate these changes. To be successful, a comprehensive automated solution must integrate different concepts, frameworks and components that work together to meet changing business needs at scale and speed.
This presentation provides a detailed overview of what it means to introduce automation into data solutions. It will explain what automation is, when and why it makes sense, and what key factors should be considered for success. It will also introduce various methods for implementing automation, including process automation and code generation, as well as practical insights that you can apply to your own data solutions.
Roelant Vos has had a varied career in data management. As a consultant, trainer, software provider and business decision-maker, he has gained broad experience and unique insights into the challenges and opportunities in this field. He looks at data management from different perspectives and is passionate about data automation and code generation.
A consistent theme throughout his career has been the discovery and application of repeatable patterns that simplify data interpretation and management. Roelant firmly believes that these approaches are the key to creating scalable, flexible and efficient data solutions.
Roelant is currently presenting his book Data Engine Thinking which deals with these principles in detail. He has also Agnostic Data Labs a company that develops innovative tools to help organizations implement data solutions in line with its forward-looking methods.
How to reduce costs and speed up data delivery by focusing on the essentials and automating the rest
Do your business users feel frustrated due to slow data delivery? Are the costs of data preparation too high? We'll show you how you may be juggling two projects at the same time - one aimed at supporting your business with information and another focused on developing an IT solution. And guess what: one of these projects is the main cause of your costs and delays.
In this presentation, we will discuss how to extract value from your data by identifying the essential tasks required to achieve this goal. Historically, trying to accomplish all of these tasks manually has led to a high rate of failed projects. We will compare different architectures that promised to reduce complexity but often failed because they left out important functions.
Finally, we will show how automation makes it possible to fulfill all necessary tasks with high quality and low costs - provided you approach the two-project problem correctly.

In my consulting experience, poorly performing data vault automations are often characterized by an excessive number of hubs and overly complex business rules with numerous dependencies between the data vault and reports. Typical signs also include hub names that do not match the customer's business model and deviations from the dimensional model. These issues typically lead to longer development times, slower automation software, longer load times and higher costs for cloud-based data warehouse solutions.

Change often feels like crossing a suspension bridge that sways with every uncertain step, especially when it comes to organizational change management (OCM). This dynamic and thought-provoking presentation will show how to overcome the "valley of despair" with resilience and courage and turn challenging transitions into opportunities for personal and organizational growth.
The presentation begins with the Kubler-Ross change curve, a model that describes the emotional progression of change. Using the metaphor of the suspension bridge, the concept of the "many firsts" mindset is introduced, encouraging the use of new experiences to break old patterns. Humorous and real-life experiences, such as an unexpected "flight" on a streetcar, illustrate how change helps us develop the ability to respond to life surprises quickly and with strength. It also discusses the importance of 'care and candor' in leadership, highlighting honesty and empathy as key to building trust in challenging situations.
Regula Fischer is an experienced organizational change expert who shares her own experiences with change in a humorous and empathetic way. With her ability to make complex topics tangible through stories, she provides valuable insights into strengthening personal resilience and the importance of authentic leadership. Her presentations inspire participants to see change as an opportunity for personal growth and stronger connections with others.
